Standard Editorial Rates

Rates vary considerably depending on the type of the work, the time frame of the assignment, the degree of special expertise required, and other factors. The industry standard for a manuscript page is 250 words.

Editing

• Basic copyediting: 5-10 manuscript pgs./hr., $40-50/hr.
• Heavy copyediting/STEM copyediting: 3–5 manuscript pgs./hr., $45–55/hr.
• Substantive, developmental or line editing: 2–6 manuscript pgs./hr., $50–60/hr.
• Technical writing (work-for-hire): 1-3 manuscript pgs./hr., $60-70/hr.
